THE YEAR OF THE DRAGON:According to ancient Chinese mythology, an evil spirit known as Nian (年) would terrorize villagers on the first day of the new year. To protect themselves, villagers would create loud noises to ward off the evil spirit. Millennia later, the Chinese still uphold this tradition by setting off fireworks continuously for a two week period.

A DATE WITH THE CENSORS: Feicheng Wurao or If You Are the One is China’s hottest reality TV show. Every week over 50 million people tune in to watch one guy, try to get a date. The seemingly innocent premise has attracted the eyes of Chinese censors and starting in 2012 strict new regulations will be made across all Chinese TV stations.
