Shot B: In-between locations A and C

Screaming Child

A child screams for help with no adults in sight towards the Southern edge of Beijing. This frame is a bit eerie in general. There seems to be some dust in the air behind the girl and some interesting geometry going on with shapes. Its a lonely frame and certainly one that shows parental neglect.

Shot B: In-between locations A and C

Photojournalism in China is interesting in that the assignments are visually compelling and constantly of unique nature; however, equally as interesting is what’s going on right next to the subjects or right outside the venues of the assignments.

While traveling in-between assignments no matter how little the distance, there seems to be an infinite amount of interesting frames everywhere I look. Here are some shots that I’ve taken while traveling in-between assignment this week, that don’t really have a purpose and most likely won’t see the light of day (except of course, here on this blog).

These are Shot B’s, in-between locations A’s and C’s.

SOHO Sanlitun

Visitors look at a map at the entrance to the recently finished Soho Sanlitun.

Truck Sleeping

A man sleeps in the back of a truck outside of Xintandi Market. I can add this image to my constantly growing collection of Chinese people sleeping in strange places series.

Bright Lips

The new SOHO Sanlitun is pretty interesting visually — however, most of the colors are fairly muted which helps make billboards jump off the building.

Beijing Cooking Oil

This suspect looking man in the back of a van filled with plastic containers full of an anonymous liquid is not nearly as shady as he looks. In fact, this is the oil used for all of your cooking. While shooting a video coming out shortley, I came across a district where people were filling van after van with oil - pumped like gasoline. A little concerning, but at least he's not planning on blowing anything up.

Xinfadi Sunset

High rise buildings jut out above farmers at Xinfadi Market in South Beijing. As many as 80,000 traders visit the wholesale market every day, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. This shot, taken at sunrise is the low point in the farmers day. The market is apparently busiest between 2;30 am and 4:00 am.

Foton Motor Company

A worker at Foton Motor Company in Northern Beijing fixes the bottom of a new clean energy bus that will be used for public transportation. I was at the enormous factory finishing a video on China's GDP, when I had a free second to jump under a bus. It was a nice change from being on them.

Making buses by hand

At the Foton Motor Company I was most surprised that they were making double-decker buses, BY HAND. Yes, thousands of people are running around without the use of enormous machines making buses. Very interesting video out of this shoot, but a couple stills when no one was watching.
